VOIPCheap.com — pretty decent quality & almost free phone or calling services
Well, I just had to start finding ways to reduce our costs in our Recruiting Department. One larger expense is calling people internationally since we recruit a lot of our candidates abroad. We were needing to speak to a candidate in Amsterdam a couple weeks ago & one of our past employees who called her boyfriend almost daily in the states from here in South Korea recommended VoipCheap.com
We had to shell out about 10 Euros, but since then, we haven’t spent more than .40 Euros and I’ve talked at least a good 10-15 hours to places like Tacoma, WA (USA), Amsterdam a few times with that same client, Olympia, WA (USA), many local calls which aren’t that expensive, but this is free! I even talked to my best friend in Seattle for a good one hour for free. VoipCheap.com allows calls to be connected over land lines instead of what I did mostly this past week in talking over a microphone in a headset. There are other options I have yet to learn, but it seems pretty good so far. Calling cell phones seems to be a little pricey or at least a bit more than than the “free” I’m liking so far for the most part.
The cons: the sound seems to be a bit worse than Skype. Also, there are sometimes a connection fee…thus the .40 Euros I’ve spent, but of course that’s NOTHING compared to what it would of cost normally. Additionally, I think it limits the service to almost a free service for the first 90 days or perhaps that’s just the lower rates? I’m not sure yet, but I’d recommend them as a service to at least try — if you’re willing to make a bunch of phone calls & probably willing to invest in a good set of headphones.

I have been using Skype for a while talking to my family and friends in overseas. I do like the service most of it, but I do have a few complaints (maybe I will talk about this on some other page later…) Anyway, I downloaded the 12VOIP software, and the interface looks much like Skype. I understand you can call landline (for free after you pay 10 Euro) but if you create an account (much like Skype) and talk through this 12VOIP on computer-to-computer, then can you talk for totally free (without paying 10 Euro first)? Does anyone have much experience on this?
I also searched around the net and found http://www.startel.pt/, this is very similar to 12VOIP (and yes, you need to deposit 10 Euro at first), but looks like there is no 3 months limit on this one. I might try this out and see how this is next…
